Trailer registration and inspection – formalities

Registering a new trailer step by step

After buying a new trailer you have 30 days to register it at the vehicle registration office for your place of residence (or company seat). From the dealer you will receive a purchase invoice and the homologation document (extract from the EC certificate of conformity) – also bring your ID, or company registration documents for businesses.

Trailer technical inspection

Light trailers up to 750 kg are exempt from periodic inspections – just keep tyres, lights and the coupling in good shape. Braked trailers must pass periodic inspections at a vehicle test station – check the dates in the registration document. Before the test, inspect the overrun brake, breakaway cable and lights.

Licence vs GVW – reminder
